Book Suggestions?

Over the last year or so I've read some terrific books, but I can not find a book that fits my currents reading needs. I need a book that is thought provoking, yet somewhat fast paced.  Lately when I try to read I end up falling asleep, thanks to my current life change. I gave up reading for a few months due to warm weather and sleepiness, but now I'm really aching for a good book. Any ideas?

I also wanted to give a few book recommendations, hopefully books you haven't heard of before.

1. The Strangeness of Beauty by Lydia Minatoya.  I read this book for my American Lit class in college but didn't really get anything out of it, but when I re-read it, it became one of my favorite books! It is probably in the genre of "Chick Lit", but I think it can be enriching for all audiences. It takes place in pre-WWII Japan, and as one website described it, it is, "A quietly daring exploration of art, family, culture, and conscience, [through] three generations of women."

This was another book I re-read from my American Lit class.  It is a very powerful book, and very well written, one of my favorite books for sure. It is contemporary novel so the writing style is different from what most people are used to in literature, but very enjoyable. This book is extremely hard to describe, but to put it very simply, it's written from three different perspectives and it is about the courtship and marriage of George and Cocoa, and also Cocoa's hometown of Willow Springs, a small island off the coast of Alabama. However, it is A LOT more intricate than that.
*There is some harsh language in this book. Also, it's much more enjoyable if you don't read any spoilers!

I'm not very good at describing plot synopses so wikipedia describes it as this: "The novel depicts the life of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion in Umuofia—one of a fictional group of nine villages in Nigeria, inhabited by the Igbo ethnic group. In addition it focuses on his three wives, his children, and the influences of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on his traditional Igbo (archaically "Ibo") community during the late nineteenth century."  This book is very entertaining and edifying.  It's also a pretty quick read.

  1. Great book suggestions! I wish I could return the favor. I'm pretty sure I haven't read any books you haven't (unless we're counting text books), and I haven't read a new book in months. The most recent book I read was Tale of Two Cities, which is always worth a re-read. Thanks for the post!

  2. I've heard of those books! Ha ha...wonder why ;) Goodness, well, I made a blog post awhile back of some books I've read lately. I think "My Name is Mary Sutter" is an AWESOME Civil War book.

  3. One of my favorite books is "Leadership and Self Deception" by the Arbinger Institute. It's awesome... like the best self-help book but written as a story. I have some of my fav parenting/marriage books under the "Best Books" tab on our new family blog...
